Why 100% Cotton Is the Print Shop Standard

5.3 oz Gildan 5000 heavy cotton

100% cotton is the default substrate for decoration, and for good reason: it absorbs ink predictably, holds registration, and carries no polyester to migrate into the print after cure. This collection stocks the cotton range from Gildan, Next Level, Hanes, and Comfort Colors, across economy heavy cotton, premium ring-spun, and garment-dyed, priced by the case with no minimums.

What is the difference between ring-spun and open-end cotton?

Both are 100% cotton, but the yarn is spun differently. Ring-spun yarn is made by continuously twisting and thinning the cotton fibres so they align in one direction, producing a smoother, stronger, finer yarn. Open-end (air-spun) cotton packs shorter fibres into a coarser, heavier yarn. The Gildan 5000 uses open-end cotton for economy screen printing, while the Next Level NL3600 and Bella + Canvas 3001 use combed ring-spun for a softer surface that prints cleaner and suits DTF and DTG.

No dye migration, cleaner cure

The practical advantage of 100% cotton over blends is that there is no polyester to bleed. On poly and poly-blend blanks, the fabric's own dye can migrate into the ink during cure and discolor the print, which forces low-cure inks and testing. Cotton removes that risk entirely, so plastisol and water-based inks cure clean across every colorway. This is why heavy cotton like the Gildan 5000 and Hanes 5280 anchors high-volume screen printing and DTF programs.

Choose by finish: open-end heavy cotton for economy and volume, ring-spun for retail hand and DTG, and Comfort Colors garment-dyed for a broken-in look. For softer blended options see CVC cotton-poly blends and tri-blend t-shirts. Case quantities are listed on each product page.

Buyer's Guide

Choosing a 100% Cotton Blank

Ring-Spun vs Open-End

Ring-spun cotton (Next Level NL3600, Bella + Canvas 3001) is smoother and prints cleaner, suiting DTF and DTG. Open-end economy cotton (Gildan 5000) is coarser and heavier but takes plastisol well and costs less per case.

No Dye Migration

100% cotton carries no polyester to bleed into the print during cure, so plastisol and water-based inks cure clean across every colorway. It removes the dye-migration risk that poly blends require testing to manage.

Weight for the Job

5.3 oz heavy cotton (Gildan 5000) is the screen-printing and DTF standard. Lighter ring-spun suits DTG and retail. 6 oz and up holds shape best for workwear and embroidery-backed jobs.

Garment-Dyed Cotton

Garment-dyed cotton (Comfort Colors) is washed after sewing for a broken-in, soft hand and pre-shrunk, slightly faded color that retail brands favor, while still taking screen printing and DTF cleanly.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Both are 100% cotton, but ring-spun yarn is twisted and thinned so the fibres align in one direction, giving a smoother, stronger, finer yarn that prints cleaner and feels softer. Open-end cotton air-spins shorter fibres into a coarser, heavier yarn that costs less per case and takes plastisol screen ink well for volume promo work.
100% cotton carries no polyester to migrate into the ink during cure, so plastisol and water-based inks cure clean across every colorway without discoloration. Poly and poly blends can suffer dye migration that forces low-cure inks and testing. Cotton removes that risk, which is why heavy cotton like the Gildan 5000 anchors screen printing.
Combed ring-spun cotton gives the best surface for DTF and DTG. The Next Level NL3600 and Bella + Canvas 3001 (Airlume combed cotton) print cleaner with strong transfer adhesion and post-wash durability. Heavier open-end cotton like the Gildan 5000 also works for DTF, while ring-spun is preferred for DTG's finer detail.
Yes. Garment-dyed cotton tees, primarily from Comfort Colors, are dyed after sewing for a broken-in, soft hand and pre-shrunk, slightly faded color. Retail and boutique brands favor the vintage look, and the heavier garment-dyed cotton still takes screen printing and DTF cleanly for a soft, worn-in finish.
There is no minimum order. Case pricing applies on every order, whether you buy a single case or a full pallet. Gildan heavy cotton ships 72 per case; premium ring-spun brands ship in 24 to 36 unit cases. Individual units can be purchased on many styles, and case counts are listed per product.
